FSSAI Registration (FSSAI Licence)

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a legal authority that offers a food license to all food business operators (FBO) in India. All FBOs must comply with FSSAI's rules and regulations to ensure food quality control.

An FBO requires an FSSAI License or Registration depending on the size of production, type of business activity, and range of operations. During the registration process, the FBO receives a 14-digit FSSAI number that must be printed on all food packages.

FSSAI Registration ensures the safety of food products and acts as a food safety certificate issued by the authority. This is mandatory for all manufacturers, traders, restaurants, grocery shops, importers, exporters, etc., assuring food quality and reducing substandard or adulterated products.

LegalRaasta provides FSSAI online registration and licensing services across India. If you're running or planning a food business in Delhi, we can assist in enhancing your food product standards through:

FSSAI Licence Number

The FSSAI logo and FSSAI license number must be clearly printed on the food package label in a contrasting color. If multiple units are involved in manufacturing or packaging, the brand owner's license number should be mentioned, and each unit's address must include its FSSAI number. For imported food products, the importer must display the FSSAI logo and license number along with their name and address — either pre-printed or via a sticker before customs clearance. Label guidelines, including font height, are defined under Regulation 2.3.3 of the Packaging and Labelling Regulation, 2011. As per Regulation 2.6.1, the FSSAI logo implies the FBO holds a valid license under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

FSSAI License Renewal

An FSSAI license is valid for 1 to 5 years. Renewal must be initiated at least 30 days before expiry to avoid penalties. A late fee of ₹100 per day applies post-expiry. The FSSAI renewal process is straightforward but essential to avoid suspension.

Required Documents for Renewal:

FSSAI officials may inspect the premises, verify documents, evaluate food safety systems, and determine whether conditions meet the current standards. If satisfied, your license will be renewed — valid for a maximum of 5 years.

FSSAI Non-Compliance

All Food Business Operators (FBOs) must follow FSSAI rules. Officials conduct surprise checks and assess hygiene, processes, and food handling using a checklist. Based on this, FBOs are rated as: Compliance (C), Partial Compliance (PC), Non-Compliance (NC), or Not Applicable (NA).

If gaps are found, an Improvement Notice is issued. Failure to comply can lead to a Show Cause Notice and even cancellation of the FSSAI number.

Appeals can be filed with the State Commissioner for Food Safety and further with the Food Safety Appellate Tribunal or the High Court if required.

Penalties for Non-Compliance
